Skywarn Recognition Day

Skywarn Recognition Day will be taking place nationally on Friday and Saturday, December 6th and 7th, 2024 for 24 hours starting at 0000Z (Friday, Dec 6th, 7:00 PM Eastern until Saturday, Dec 7th, 7:00 PM Eastern). The NWS Cleveland Office will be participating from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM on Saturday, December 7th, 2024 (please note this time frame was changed and shortened from the original 7pm end). We will be operating under the call sign WX8CLE and will be active on UHF, VHF, and HF (HF bands to be determined later). We will also periodically spin the dial on local repeaters.

Skywarn Recognition Day was developed in 1999 by the National Weather Service and the American Radio Relay League. It celebrates the contributions that Skywarn volunteers make to the NWS mission, the protection of life and property. Amateur radio operators comprise a large percentage of the Skywarn volunteers across the country. The Amateur radio operators also provide vital communication between the NWS and emergency management if normal communications become inoperative. During the Skywarn Special Event, operators will visit NWS offices and contact other radio operators across the world.

Anyone interested in attending should please contact us with the times you are attending, your email address, and your call sign (if applicable). All are welcome, no amateur radio license needed. Access to the inside of the building will be restricted based on attendance as the operating area can only accommodate a certain number of people at once. Additionally, any sort of severe weather event could potentially result in us cancelling the operation. Those who sign up will be advised of any last minute changes to the operation, or we can be contacted on the air (see frequencies below).

When you arrive on site, please call us on 146.475 simplex for building access. DO NOT RING ANY DOOR BUZZERS.

The address for the National Weather Service Cleveland is 925 Keynote Cir Suite 314, Brooklyn Heights, OH 44131.
